Automation Burndown Report

The Automation Burndown report shows the number of cases that are getting automated over a specified period of time (monthly, quarterly, etc.), reducing manual efforts. Cases can be specified in a variety of ways, the same as in the Automation Coverage report.

Steps to Generate Automation Burndown Report

Step 1: To generate Automation Burndown Report, simply click on the Chevron option for Automation Burndown.

Step 2: Once you click on the chevron icon, the Automation Burndown Report input window will be displayed on the screen. Select the desired Case Selection Criteria from the given options- Cases, Sets, Cycles, and Requirements. With each case selection criteria, users can also specify:

  • Activity Start Date: It shows the date from which the burndown needs to be calculated. 

Activity Start Date is an optional field. If you leave this field blank, the burndown will be shown from when the project was initialized.

  • Activity End Date: It shows the date till which burndown will be calculated. 

Activity End Date is an optional field. If you leave this field blank, the burndown will be shown till the date the report is being generated.

  • Guideline End Date: If there was a date until which automation work should have been completed, it can be specified here. 

Guideline End Date is an optional field. If provided, the graph will show a grey line depicting the rate at which cases should be automated to meet the deadline.

  • Activity Time Period: This is the time period grouping that should be used to group the burndown data in the table. 

 

For Cases Case Selection Criteria

Users can specify a list of cases by using the filter option or keep it empty to select all cases of the project. The default burndown time period is set as ‘Day’but users can choose any of the available options.

For Sets Case Selection Criteria

Users can specify a list of sets by using the filter option. The automation burndown report will be generated for unique cases belonging to specified sets. The default burndown time period is set as ‘Day’.

For Cycles Case Selection Criteria

Users can specify a list of cycles by using the filter option. The automation burndown report will be generated for unique cases belonging to specified cycles. The default burndown time period is set as ‘Day’.  

For Requirements Case Selection Criteria

Users can specify a list of requirements by specifying Jira issue IDs, by using JQL or by using Jira’s saved filters. The automation burndown report will be generated for cases linked to the specified requirements. 

Step 3: Finally, click on the Generate button. 

Once you click on the Generate button, the report output will be displayed on the screen. 

Automation Burndown Report Output- Overview

Here’s a detailed explanation of the Automation Burndown report output.  

Overview

The Overview section shows the key statistics as per the given criteria. Here’s a detailed explanation of the Overview section:

  • Total Cases: It shows the number of cases based on the specified input criteria.

  • Automatable Cases: It shows the number of cases that are not marked as Manual in the ‘Automation Status’ field.

  • Automated: It shows the number of cases marked as ‘Automated’ in the ‘Automation Status’ field.

  • Pending: It shows the Cases that are yet to be automated (Automatable cases = Automated + Pending).

  • Total Effort: It is the sum of estimated effort for all cases specified via the input criteria.

  • Manual Effort: It is the sum of estimated effort for all cases marked as ‘Manual’ in the ‘Automation Status’ field.

  • Effort Saving: It is the sum of estimated effort for all cases that have been automated (automated cases).

  • Prospective Gain: It is the sum of estimated effort for all cases that are yet to be automated (pending cases).

Burndown

The burndown section shows:

  • Graph: It depicts the rate at which specified cases were automated.

  • Table: It shows detailed numbers based on the ‘Burndown Time Period’ specified in the input.

Graph

Graph shows the cases at the start of the date specified in Activity Start Date or from the date AIO Tests were enabled for the project. As the cases are automated, the graph shows the number of cases that are yet to be automated at a given point.

Table

Table shows the Cumulative Total and the total by the specified burndown time period in the input.

The Cumulative Total has 3 columns:

  • Pending: It shows the number of cases to be automated at the start of the specified date and then as per the grouping.

  • Automated: It shows the number of cases that have been automated as per the grouping.

  • Automated %: It shows the percentage of automation done in the specified grouping.
